How to Keep House While Drawing by KC Davis

Review of: How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis

I read this on Kindle Unlimited. It was going away in 5 days and I thought I need to read that before it’s gone.

This book was interesting. I do not think I am the audience. I think the audience is hoarders or people dealing with A LOT in their life and need help. That is not me. I think I mostly need organizational hacks and tidying rules.

This book does give real life solutions for real life problems, which is something I liked. I, however, have already figured most of these things out myself.

Here are a few examples of the things I have already figured out on my own.

Leave a hamper where the clothes come off. I figured that out ages ago. That is why it moved from the bedroom to the bathroom. Putting things where you use them in general is something that I figured out a long time ago. This is also why my makeup sits on my desk and Aryi’s toy are kept in the living room.

You don’t have to do everything like everyone else, you don’t have to fold your clothes. I figured this out years ago, and our socks and underwear don’t get folded. Like is anyone going to check? Does it actually matter? No, and no.

Music is a great motivator. I have pretty much always known that. Nothing helps you clean like a good playlist.

She talks about the 5 things to clean. I feel like most of us know we need to take care of trash, dishes, and laundry. I hope most of that isn’t a problem for most people. For us especially it has just been too much stuff. There is too much stuff that doesn’t have a home.

I do like that she talks about how everyone’s day is not the same and we all have different capacities. She says, “We do have the same 24 hours, but with different demands and limitations”.

She does make you feel good when reading this book and I loved when she said to look at your messy house and see how much joy you had or how hard of a day you made it through. I will now look at a messy play area or a fully covered dining table as a day filled with fun, connection, and learning. I will look at a messy kitchen as a fed and happy family.

Overall, this was a good book. It was just mostly not for me. Was it worth the read? Yes. It was short and with Kindle Unlimited it was free. Would I recommend this book? To your average person with a few messes or piles, absolutely not. To someone I knew was hoarding or living in unsafely unclean conditions, yes. To a hot mess postpartum mom doing her best to get through the day, no, I would just give her my 3 pages of notes I took.
