Yes, We Cosleep
May 20, 2024
Yes, we cosleep. No, we did not plan on it.
First, Let me say, the AAP and probubly everyone else agrees that babies should not be in the bed with you.
I never thought we would be cosleeping. I thought we would put Aryi in his own crib in his own room. I thought cosleeping was the worst, most dangerous thing in the world. Then we had Aryi.
For anyone who is not aware, Aryi was born 3 months early. Because of this, he did not come home for over 4 months. When he got home, he needed to be held. We needed to hold him. He would only nap on me or my husband’s chest. He would wake up if we put him down and left the room.
At night, however, we were able to put him in the crib, in our room. He would be tired enough at night to get good sleep. I also think he felt us right there in the room with him.
One night, Aryi was sick. He would not detach himself from us. He needed to feel us right there. That night we decided to keep him in the bed with us. That was the only way any of us was going to get any sleep that night. We cuddled him and I woke up hourly to take his temperature (it was my anxiety, it gets bad if Aryi is sick). From that night on, Aryi has slept in the bed with us.
Aryi is 2 and still sleeps with us. Would I change that? No, absolutely not. Again, I am not telling anyone else to cosleep or giving any kind of advice. I am just telling our story. Aryi is at the age now to where he has the ability to climb in and out of the bed himself. We are no longer worried about leaving him on the bed at night to go cook or clean or spend time together.
Cosleeping has made our family closer and made life a lot easier for us when Aryi needs us in the middle of the night. We cherish the cuddles we have gotten over the past almost 2 years and hope to have so many more before Aryi decides it is time to sleep in his “big boy bed”.
